businesses are getting prepared. what the giants-cardinals matchup will mean to the local economy. the shuttle is closer to home. but with complications. why there won't be an on-time arrival for this final mission. and a bay area college student makes a half-court shot. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. various sports fans in heaven tonight. the 49ers are red hot and the giants are on the eve of another national championship series. a look at how baseball is good for business. >> reporter: red, white and blue, championship game, going on at at&t park, while the cardinals and giants held separate practice sessions on the field. business was great in the giants dugouts sports store.

kiply just had to have another giants shirts. >> i bought another shirt, because they won. it's good for pedro's and pete's. along the corridor and probably public house, because it gets really crowded when the giants are playing and people can't afford tickets. >> reporter: good too for the popular paragon bar. >> it was chaos in 2010. most of the time. but it was fun, you know. lots of people excited and everyone piling out on the streets. >> reporter: now paragon is gearing up for a repeat and trying to make room for as many as they can fit in. >> people have been calling all day. that's what we're doing a little differently this time. we're doing all walk-in basis, so first come, first served for the tables. we've opened up two additional rooms. we have a room in the back. >> reporter: businesses are gearing up, in just the past couple of days.

>> i've seen a lot of people go up and down second street, which is where i work, and they are out there, behind the giants. >> and you're buying giants' gear? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: he says it feels good all around town, having another giants championship play-off about to get underway. >> it's going great things for san francisco. for these guys to do what they did in cincinnati and bring it home, they have hopefully a good seven games ahead of them. hopefully not seven. >> reporter: seven games if the giants win would be a torturous thriller but good for business. reporting live in san francisco, cbs 5. and here's a look at the giants schedule against the cardinals. in the best of seven series. the giants have home field advantage. the first game is tomorrow at at&t park at 5:00. game 2 also at 5:00 on monday. then it's off to st. louis for three games. then, if needed, back to san francisco for the last two. kim will have more on

tomorrow's game in a few minutes. tomorrow, the shuttle endeavour's journey has slowed from a crawl to a dead stop. it's eight hours behind schedule and not expected to arrive at the california science center until tomorrow. crews are having trouble with the trailer carrying endeavour. and the large crowds have made logistics more complicated. thousands of have waited hours. >> reporter: people in los angeles can be a bit blase about seeing stars. yet, seeing a starship is a show even hollywood cannot rival. >> it's awesome. so big too. i can't believe it's going down the street. >> reporter: you don't normally see a space shutting outside a donut shop. crowds could read the numbers on the tiles. >> i want to see it, because i never saw it. and i wanted to be an

astronaut. >> reporter: moving a 78-ton spacecraft in the second- largest city in the country is an endeavor in itself. they walk alongside the giant rig, guiding it with a wireless joystick. the driver says the crowd has been routeing for him. >> there's some real enthusiasm, when we worked our way through a real tight spot. >> reporter: on some neighborhood streets, the shuttle's 78-foot wing span didn't have room to spare. >> we put taller power polls in and we raised the wire to a higher clearance, that way we can get the power on for the consumers in this area. >> reporter: the streets also had to be reinforced with 2700

metal plates. this whole thing ways 375,000 pounds. >> this is the only time it's going to happen. it's the last shuttle, never going to do this again. none of them are ever going to do it again. >> reporter: endeavour was built in california and arrived back home in style three weeks ago on the back of a 747. the shuttle will dock here tonight at the california science center, the end of its final mission. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. tonight the pentagon says it's investigating a collision between a navy submarine and a cruiser. it happened at an undisclosed location. no one was hurt. the sub involved was a uss ship. the extent of the damage, is quote, being evaluated. in campaign 2012, both presidential candidates are back in the battleground states and for good reason. new poll numbers show mitt romney continuing to close the

gap. in florida, he now leads the president 51-44. and a new national gallup poll is ahead 49-47. >> reporter: paul ryan tailgated with football fans in ohio. mitt romney rallied supporters. the republican team fanned out across the key battleground state saturday. >> we need ohio. if we get ohio, we're gonna be able to take back america? >> reporter: the stakes are high. no republican has won the white house without a victory in ohio. at a rally in portsmouth, romney told the crowd he sees the enthusiasm going. >> when i'm president, i'm going to help save the american family and get good jobs for every american. >> reporter: voters say the economy is the no. 1 issue in this election. >> i bet on american workers and american ingenuity, and three years later, that is paying off in a big way. >> reporter: president obama argues his decision to bail out the auto industry saved jobs. >> gm is back.

ford and chrysler are growing again. together, our auto industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs in america. >> reporter: the president arrived on saturday. >> it's good to see you! >> reporter: they say four million people have donated money for president obama's reelection bid. he will spend the next few days in williamsburg, cramming for the second of three debates. the first matchup gave romney a boost. the race is now a dead heat. president obama has pledged to be more aggressive in round two on tuesday night. >> you can watch tuesday's nights second presidential debate right here on cbs 5. coverage begins at 6. this debate will be a town hall format, allowing people to ask questions about foreign and domestic policy. well, here at home, it's statewide propositions that are getting voters' attention and both parties are doing their best to educate people before

they head to the polls. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec on how the campaigns are taking a personal approach. >> this election is very important. >> reporter: that's one point we can all agree on, the rest of it from propositions to the president, not so much. that's why the california democrat party set up a day of action today, going door to door to educate voters on the issues. >> when you go out there, and you say, oh, this is important, i should know the issues. i really think it's effective. >> reporter: it's a strategy the republicans are employing too. >> it's really a combination of getting stuff in the mail, seeing what's on tv, then that direct contact that brings the deal home. >> reporter: with such a wide array of decisions to be made, we spoke with a lot of people out on the street who have not yet made up their minds. >> there's a lot more investigating to do. >> i'm still reading on some of the propositions. >> reporter: but most people we spoke with don't. >> i think it's actually really rude and bad when people are

tomorrow's jump near roswell, new mexico. they will travel to the edge of space. then he's going to jump from 23 miles high. he should reach super sonic speeds as he falls at 700 miles an hour, breaking the sound barrier. we hear stories every week about silicon valley companies hiring, but what's not getting attention are all the layoffs. >> reporter: with each new product, each ground-breaking innovation, high-tech is an employment magnet. >> there is a hiring boom in silicon valley. >> reporter: chris helps high- tech workers find jobs. the tougher part is keeping those jobs. >> occupations are created and destroyed here faster than anywhere else, just like new technologies are created and destroyed faster and replaced, and they become obsolete faster than anywhere else. >> reporter: with every every new round of hiring, there are

also layoffs by the thousands. the unemployment rate in the silicon valley is 8.5%, higher than the national average. >> life is not as great in silicon valley as we'd like to think. >> reporter: tom, a logistics manager, has been downsized four times. >> we are surrounded by overachievers and innovators and people doing great, great work. oftentimes it is tough to have to explain that you're in a position where you're still searching. >> reporter: he's been out of work for ten months. an eternity in silicon valley. >> the longer you're unemployed, the less desirable you become. and things are changing so quickly, if you haven't been doing it for six months or more, you're already obsolete. >> reporter: in job interviews, his 25 years of experience are often brushed off. >> each time you're overqualified for this particular role we're trying to fill. >> no employer is ever going to

admit that they're looking for a younger worker. they'll say they're looking for a fresh perspective. >> reporter: that is leaving many veterans in the valley feeling old before their time. >> i'm not ready to retire, absolutely not ready to retire. >> reporter: tom is proud of the trophy he got at sun microsystems. but his best of the best award is not good enough to guarantee work in silicon valley today. >> well, a college student from the bay area is the proud owner of a new car after he took an unbelievable basketball shot. this youtube video is from san diego state's midnight madness college basketball event last night. that is craig, who makes the half-court dunk to win. it's safe to say he upstaged the basketball players at least for this night. that's impressive. if you like the heat, it's

back on. >> it certainly is, after a dreary, cloudy, cool and sometimes rainy past few days. now we segue into warmer conditions. good evening, everybody. let's head on outside, where we have the treasure island music festival going on this evening. it continues tomorrow at treasure island. you can see the beautiful ferris wheel, looks like it's spinning in fast motion there. 70's in san francisco, which is spot on for this time of year. low 70's in san jose. still six degrees below normal. meanwhile, tonight, with a blanket of clouds lining the coast, and into the gaps in the bay, we will see overnight lows into the 40's and 50's. becoming partly cloudy in the overnight hours. a few clouds around oakland. otherwise tomorrow, a great start. blue finish. then warmer each day.

wait till you see that seven- day forecast. right now, area low pressure to the north. banging up against the pacific northwest, taking its rain showers internationally into vancouver, because we're under a ridge of high pressure, bringing us the seasonal conditions tomorrow. and then we're going to go from mild to warm conditions each and every day. so how does the fog play a part in your sunday? overnight, watch the fog go on by. in the usual gaps, we see the penetration of the low clouds and patchy fog. but it backs off very early in the afternoon hours. there goes a wave of clouds, all associated with that area of low pressure to the north. a few clouds floating by for our 49er action at 1:25, playing host to the champs. new york giants, 66 degrees. and ample sunshine. your forecast, let's pinpoint it. beginning with half moon bay where the pumpkin fest is taking place, flirting with 70 degrees. then we jump up into the 80's

around the santa clara valley. 84, brentwood. mid 70's in pleasant hill. a little bit warmer than that to north in napa. across the golden gate bridge to mill valley, 72 degrees. the extended forecast, mild conditions tomorrow. a couple degrees warmer by monday. then check this out. we're back into the 90's inland. even pacifica on thursday is at 75. inland, most notable will be the air quality. it will deteriorate to moderate levels. then it doesn't look like we see much of a cool-down into saturday. meanwhile, you forgot about this, i know you did, ann. >> it's the good guys. >> baseball is my middle name and we've got bumgarner on the mound for the good guys. 64 degrees at at&t park. let's play ball! we've got football, baseball.

game 2. vogelsong went five innings, giving up a run and three hits in game 3. >> really, if you look at the game we had and the game they had, they were similar. we were up 6-0, barely hung on, and they found a way to get it done. both gloves at some point had their backs to the wall. they were down a couple runs in the ninth. they found a way to get it done. i think it says a lot about the two clubs, the character of the clubs, and how hard they fight. it should be a really hard- fought series here. >> it's recovered by the giants! the kick is good! and the giants are going back to the super bowl! >> still painful for 49ers fans. they will try to erase those bitter memories from that sunday night in january. a rematch of the championship game against the new york
